South Africa’s Bafana Bafana clinched a vital 2-1 win over Guinea in their CHAN Group C clash at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda, on Monday — ending a 24-year goal drought against the West African side.
Coming off a spirited 1-1 draw against group favourites Algeria on Friday, Bafana struck early through captain Neo Maema, whose ninth-minute grasscutter from outside the box beat an unsighted Guinea goalkeeper Moussa Camara. The opener came after a clever link-up with Thabiso Kutumela.
However, the early lead did not spark the dominance Bafana hoped for. Guinea fought back and levelled just before the break when Moussa Camara capitalised on a swift counter-attack, making it 1-1.
The decisive moment arrived in the 54th minute. A well-worked move from midfield found right-back Wayde Jooste in space, and his precise cross was hammered home by Kutumela to restore South Africa’s advantage.
With many players currently unattached to clubs, fatigue set in late on, prompting coach Molefi Ntseki to inject fresh legs with the introductions of Tebogo Tlolane, Matlhari Makaringe, and Kaketso Majadibodu.
Guinea pressed hard in the closing stages, but Bafana’s defence held firm to seal the win and keep their qualification hopes alive, finally ending The Elephants’ unbeaten and unbreached record against South Africa since 2001.
