MPUMALANGA – 18 AUGUST 2025 – Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads after two separate crashes claimed 11 lives on Monday morning.
In the first incident, four men, including the driver, were killed when a sedan overturned on the R547 between Kinross and Kriel. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Evander.
In a second crash on the N12 between Delmas and Emalahleni, an articulated truck — seemingly converted to transport passengers — collided with another truck while ferrying farm workers. Six passengers died instantly, while six others sustained serious injuries and 11 escaped with minor injuries. Tragically, a seventh passenger later succumbed to injuries in hospital, bringing the death toll in this accident to seven.
Investigations into both crashes are underway.
MEC Macie expressed concern over the rising number of fatalities despite government interventions to reduce road carnage.
“More than 80 percent of collisions on the road are caused by human behaviour. Recklessness continues to rob families of their loved ones and claim innocent lives. We call on all motorists to be vigilant and obey the rules of the road,” said Macie.
He extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
