MPUMALANGA MEC REFLECTS ON 2024/2025 FESTIVE SEASON ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN

Following the release of the National Festive Season Road Crash Statistics by the Ministry of Transport on 20 January 2025, the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, presented a detailed report on the province’s 2024/2025 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign during a media briefing held on 21 January 2025 in Mbombela.

The event was attended by prominent stakeholders, including the President of CONTRALESA, Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena; Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Safety, Mr. Life Monini; Executive Director of Buscor, Dr. Norah Fakude; Ehlanzeni District Mayor, Councillor Terror Shabangu; as well as the Executive Mayors and MMCs responsible for Public Safety from Nkomazi and Bushbuckridge.

The MEC provided an overview of the Festive Season Road Safety Plan, reflecting on its implementation, analyzing road crash data, highlighting successes, and identifying challenges. He also shared plans to address areas of concern and outlined the province's most problematic routes contributing significantly to road accidents.

Additionally, the MEC detailed the various law enforcement operations carried out during the festive season, which spanned from 1 December 2024 to 11 January 2025. The province recorded 118 crashes and 143 fatalities during this period, showing a decline compared to the 158 fatalities recorded in the 2023 festive season.

More than 150,000 vehicles were stopped during law enforcement operations across the province. Among these, 175 drivers were arrested for offenses such as drunk driving, and over 25,000 summonses were issued.
