Msukaligwa Local Municipality Mayor Alderwoman M.P Nkosi officially handed over two completed street projects to the community of Ward 5 & 17 on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. The projects involved the design and construction of Msheveni and Thanjekwayo Street in Ward 17, which had deteriorated due to potholes and a culvert bridge that had reached its design life. The mayor emphasized that the project will alleviate traffic congestion on alternative roads, as motorists previously avoided the area due to its poor conditions.

The project, valued at R16,293,838.77, was awarded to local company Ndlambilis Construction and Project, with Tirisano Consulting serving as the implementing agent. Sixteen local SMMEs benefited from the project, receiving 30% of the budget as required by the government. Additionally, 25 local residents were employed during the project's duration, which was completed on May 9, 2024, after a three-month extension due to material delays, community disruptions, and inclement weather.

The mayor highlighted that the project not only involved the construction of 1.17KM and 0.62KM of Msheveni and Thanjekwayo Street but also upgraded the stormwater drainage system, culvert bridge, and constructed a walkway for the community's safety during rainy seasons.

The second project involved the resurfacing of Gwebu Street, which had become damaged due to heavy rains earlier in the year. The municipality swiftly intervened to repair the road, which had become a major thoroughfare due to the diversion of traffic from the damaged Mabuza Street (Kamzwempi) bridge. The resurfacing of Gwebu Street and a portion of Thanjekwayo Street was completed in record time at a cost of R5 million. The community requested additional speed humps on Gwebu Street due to increased traffic and reckless driving.
